Description

Johann Christian Gutscher, son of Johannes Gutscher, was born on 21 February 1739 in Gammelsbach, south of Beerfelden (today in Baden-Württemberg). He married in nearby Wald-Michelbach on 9 January 1759 to Anna Katharina Albrecht, daughter of Johann Georg Albrecht, who was from neighboring Siedelsbrunn.

They evidently immigrated first to Denmark (Schleswig-Holstein) and then on to Russia where they settled in the colony of Anton on 7 September 1764. Christian is recorded there as a widower along with his daughter Eva Katharina (age 4½) on the 1767 census in Household No. 12.

This surname does not appear to have continued among the German colonies along the Volga River.
