Census 1798 Corrections & Comments

The following are corrections to and comments on the 1798 Census, compiled by Brent Alan Mai, and published in 1999 by the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia. Each household in the census was assigned a unique code. The corrections and comments are listed by those codes. Additional comments and corrections should be directed to: [email protected].

An05   Georg Orner – surname should be Ordner.
An16   spouse Maria Elisabeth Wohlschleger – surname should be Wohlschläger.
An20   Bernhard Ganzhorn – surname should be Ganshorn.
An31   stepchildren Johann Michael & Anna Barbara should be listed with surname Wensinger.
An38   Konrad Gall – surname should be Hall.
An44   Christian Rechling – surname may be Redler.
An47   brother-in-law Karl Rechling – surname may be Redler.
An49   daughter-in-law Anna Elisabeth Roth – surname should be Reth.
An55   Michael Ret – surname should be Reth.
An57   Johannes Laut – surname should be Lauch.
An62 – spouse Eva Katharina Ret – surname should be Reth.

Bz012  son Ludwig Karl – Karl is middle name and should not be in bold font.
Bz049  daughter-in-law Katharina Herdt – surname should be Hardt.
Bz054  spouse Wilhelmina Eirich – surname should be Eurich.
Bz063  Hermann Fech – surname should be Fecht.
Bz065  spouse Margaretha Eirich – surname should be Eurich.
Bz066  Baltasar Eirich – surname should be Eurich.
Bz069  son Katharina – should be listed as daughter.
Bz071  Martin Hubert – 1767 census lists surname as Huber.
Bz074  spouse Charlotta Fech – surname should be Fecht.

Bz088  Katharina Eirich – surname should be Eurich.  Daughter Magdalena Eirich – surname should be Eurich.
Bz108  son Christian Gottfried – Gottfried is middle name and should not be in bold font.

Bg01   Johann Wilhelm Spädt – surname should be Späth.
Bg05   spouse Katharina Barbara Huber/Hubert – surname should be Huber.  Stepdaughter Maria Katharina – surname should be listed as Bangert.
Bg07   other Ägidius – surname should be listed as Stehm.  Note that identifies his father should list him as Wilhelm Benedict Stehm.
Bg08   others Johann Georg, Maria Elisabeth, Elisabeth Margaretha, and Maria Katharina should have their surname Willhauser listed.
Bg19   Johann Just Gatt/Hatt – surname should probably be Gath.
Bg20   Johannes Daiber/Teiber – surname should be Deibert.
Bg21   Heinrich Anton Bork – 1767 census lists surname as Burg.
Bg22   Johann Philipp Bork – 1767 census lists surname as Burg.
Bg28   Johann Heinrich Sieber – surname should be Siebert.

Br01    spouse Elisabeth Margaretha Engelmanson – surname should be Engelmann.
Br10    Johann Kaspar – Kaspar is middle name, other records indicate that the surname should be Bauer.
Br11    son-in-law Johann Wendel Sinner – surname believed to be Simon.
Br20    spouse Margaretha Riegel – surname should be Reichel.  Stepsons’ surname should be Schlund.
Br23    spouse’s deceased husband Lorenz Kelleroth – surname should be Hellroth.
Br24    Georg Renz – surname should be Renner.
Br28    spouse Christina Engard – surname should be Erhard.
Br32    spouse Christina Gol – surname should be Hohl.
Br43    Karl Schröder – surname should be Schräder.
Br45    Elisabeth Vogel – surname of deceased husband and all children should be Konradÿ.
Br49    daughter-in-law Katharina Konrad – surname should be in bold font and should be Konradÿ.
Br59    spouse Elisabeth Barbara Krantz – surname should be Kratz.
Br69    Johann Heinrich Bruch – surname should be Brug.  Daughter Anna Margaretha (age 1) should be listed as granddaughter.
Br70    son Friedrich Jakob – age should be 9 (not 19).
Br71    Jakob Bruch – surname should be Brug.  Note should read in part “now has only his home . . .”  Spouse Anna Margaretha Reinhardt – age should be 37 according to 1834 census which would make her old enough to be the mother of the son listed.

Bb37  Daniel Seibel - surname should be Seibert.
Bb39  Johann Nicolaus Seifert - surname should be Seibert.

En04  Hitler should be Gitler.

Gk45  Johannes Wunsch is 70 (not 40) years old.

Ka106 Johanna Elisabeth Unterlich – surname should be Wunderlich.

Kk02   Johann Andreas – should be son, not spouse.

Km040 Surname Andreas Dikuen – surname should be Duquesne.

Kr14    Daniel Burgardt – later records indicate that the surname should be Berschauer.
Kr31    Johann Michael Rachÿ – later records indicate that the surname should be Reich.
Kr36    Sophia Rachÿ – later records indicate that the surname should be Reich.

Ls09    Anna Abholz – surname should be Opholz with deceased husband identified as Michael Opholz.
Ls41    Elisabeth Aselborn – surname should probably be Asselborn.

Lz04    Katharina Neckermen's surname is probably Ackermann.

Nr009  daughter-in-law Katharina Heinrich – Heinrich is her maiden name and should be in bold font.
Nr064  Wilhelm Stärkel – at this time, surname was spelled Störkel according to other Norka documents.
Nr065  Konrad Stärkel – see Nr065.
Nr113  daughter-in-law Christina Georg – surname is Georg and should be in bold font, and indexed as such.
Nr116  Konrad Reischer – surname should be Reuscher.  Louisa Soiberg – surname should be Sorberger.
Nr127  spouse Rosina Heinrich – Heinrich is her maiden name and should be in bold font.
Nr128  spouse Margaretha Traut – surname should probably be Traudt.
Nr131  Heinrich Traut – surname should probably be Traudt.
Nr138  sister-in-law Katharina Reischer – surname should be Reuscher.
Nr141  Wilhelm Traut – surname should probably be Traudt.

Zr32  Andreas Reit is the son-in-law (not the spouse).

Mv1184  Kaspar Seifhert should be Seibert. Kazan should probably be city of Kizlyar.
