Biography

Robert Brooks "Bob" Beall was born in Portland, Oregon, on April 24, 1948, a descendant of Conrad and Elisabeth Derr, Volga German immigrants from Norka.

In his senior year at Hillsboro Union High School (Hilhi), Bob was named "Baseball Player of the Year" for the state of Oregon, and his team won the state championship.

Bob was offered full-ride scholarships to the University of Oregon and Oregon State University (OSU). He was selected captain of the baseball team at OSU and first-team All-Pac-8 first baseman. Bob also made a splash in his sophomore and junior seasons by being the first left-handed third baseman in Pac-8 history.

Upon graduating from OSU with a mathematics degree in 1970, Bob signed with the Philadelphia Phillies organization. He was assigned to that team's low-A Northwest League affiliate in Walla Walla, Washington. Bob hit .389, the highest average in organized baseball that year, and led the league in virtually every offensive category. He spent the next season in the high-A Carolina League (Newport News, Virginia), the following year with the double-AA Eastern League team at Reading, Pennsylvania, and the next season in "Triple-A" with the Eugene Emeralds.

Bob was traded to the Atlanta Braves and made his major league debut in May 1975. He spent the next two years in the minor leagues and returned to the Braves for the 1978 season and most of the 1979 season.

In July 1980, Bob was traded from Richmond to Portland. During the 1980 season, he was called up by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He spent the 1981 season (his final season) as a player-coach for the Portland Beavers, the Pirates' Triple-A team in the Pacific Coast League.

Bob retired from baseball in 1981 and joined the Nike Corporation.
