When the Volga German settlers departed for Russia in 1766, neither of the current Catholic churches in Stambach and Contwig existed. According to the Contwig community website, after the Reformation, the previously Catholic St. Thomas church became a Lutheran church. In 1684, after French control of the area began, the church was shared by both the Catholic and Lutheran parishes. The current Lutheran church was contructed between 1781 and 1784 on the site where the previous church building had stood. The shared use of the building by both Catholic and Lutheran parishes continued until the new Catholic church building in Contwig (St. Laurentius) was constructed between 1903 and 1905. The Catholic church in Stambach was constructed between 1950 and 1952.
